Random Act of Kindness
Dingbats are visual word puzzles from which a well known phrase or saying has to be identified.
This true story documented by Nicholas Tomalin and Ron Hall has been filmed under the title The Mercy and was released in cinemas in February. The adaptation stars Colin Firth and Rachel Weisz, was directed by The Theory of Everything’s James Marsh, and was written by Bourne Ultimatum writer, Scott Z Burns. In 1968, Donald Crowhurst was trying to market a nautical navigation device he had developed, and saw the Sunday Times Golden Globe race (the first single-handed, non-stop, round-the-world yacht race) as the perfect opportunity to get publicity. However, he wasn’t a skilled yachtsman, and eventually decided to falsify his location so he could avoid the dangerous Southern Ocean and join the pack on their way back to the UK. His erroneous reports had those following the race thinking he was winning, but eight months after he set off, his boat was discovered in the mid-Atlantic with no one on board. His log book betrayed a mind unravelled by the pressure.
Your writing task: write a diary entry as if you have been stranded on a boat for months on end explaining how you feel. Try to show how you feel instead of telling the reader. Hand in completed responses to the English Office.
